Script Review:

A Slice of New York, A Slice of Truth

Kyoto Cinematica Award Winner: Mecca

Written by
Monte Albers de Leon

Monte Albers de Leon’s Mecca Draft 4 opens with something deceptively simple: a fallen slice of pizza in Battery Park, nearly claimed by a rat. That small image becomes the heartbeat of a story about survival, prejudice, and privilege in post-9/11 New York.
At its center are Amaan, a young Muslim professional eager to begin a new life, and Robert, his white Midwestern boyfriend still learning the rhythms of the city. Their love is tender but fragile, tested by the weight of suspicion and fear. Amaan is tackled by security guards for saying “good morning.” Robert, meanwhile, stumbles into Wall Street, rising through absurd circumstance after his predatory mentor dies mid-binge.
The script balances satire and sorrow with remarkable precision. Boardrooms debate “perception” while ignoring humanity; hotels shower Robert with perks “for staying during extraordinary times,” even as Amaan is shoved aside. The humor is biting, sometimes surreal, but always tethered to truth.
What elevates Mecca is its imagery. Pizza slices kicked into gutters. Rats scurrying along subway tracks. Shrines to the missing taped to fences. And above it all, the refrain: “during these extraordinary times.” A phrase meant to comfort becomes a weapon, justifying exclusion and paranoia.

Though sprawling and chaotic at times, the script captures New York’s contradictions with rare boldness. It is messy, vibrant, and unapologetically political—qualities that made it a standout at Kyoto Cinematica 2024–25.

Mecca Draft 4 is less a conventional love story than a parable of survival, loss, and resilience. It dares to laugh in the face of tragedy while never forgetting the human cost. Like New York itself, it demands to be felt, endured, and remembered.
